Dr Gorab is a board certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in Orange, California. He is one of the managing partners of Orthopaedic Specialty Institute, the largest subspecialty orthopedic surgery practice in Orange County, comprised of 19 orthopedic specialists. Dr Gorab’s practice is limited to joint replacement and arthritis surgery, and he performs over 550 joint replacement procedures per year. He is an attending physician and former department chairman at St Joseph Hospital in Orange and an Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the California Orthopaedic Association, and the Western Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Gorab is currently the Chief Medical Officer of Hoag Orthopaedic Institute.

Dr Gorab received his undergraduate education at Colgate University in Upstate New York. He completed his medical education at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society and receiving the Lange Outstanding Achievement Award from the university. Dr Gorab completed his surgical internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of California, Irvine. He then completed an additional fellowship year in joint replacement and arthritis surgery at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr Gorab is actively involved in surgeon education, design, and development of orthopedic implants and procedures. Dr. Gorab is one of the highest volume direct anterior total hip arthroplasty surgeons in the nation. He is a US designer for a partial knee replacement implant manufactured by a Stryker Orthopedics, a major orthopedic implant vendor, and was also one of the clinical investigators for several FDA Investigational Device studies pertaining to hip replacement implants and bearing surfaces manufactured by DePuy, Johnson & Johnson Corporation. Dr Gorab is actively involved in several orthopedic research and development projects. He has published a number of articles in the orthopaedic literature pertaining to arthritis and joint replacement surgery and has presented at numerous conferences both nationally and internationally on arthritis and joint replacement procedures. Dr Gorab is president of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Institute of Southern California, a non-profit medical foundation which supports physician education, clinical research, and medical education to allied health providers and the surrounding communities.

Dr Steven Barnett is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with a practice specializing in Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery for arthritic conditions. He is a partner of Orthopaedic Specialty Institute in Orange County. Dr. Barnett is one of the highest volume direct anterior total hip arthroplasty surgeons in the nation. Dr. Barnett has also been one of the highest volume complex revision arthroplasty surgeon in Southern California for over a decade. Dr Barnett is an attending physician at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, CA and Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach. He also participates in Orthopaedic Residency Training for the University of California, Irvine at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach. Currently, Dr. Barnett is chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at Hoag Orthopaedic Institute and St. Joseph’s Hospital.

He received his undergraduate degree in Physiology at the University of California, Berkeley. Subsequent to this, he attended Boston University School of Medicine for his medical degree. At Boston University, Dr Barnett graduated Cum Laude and was selected as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He then went on to complete both his surgical internship and orthopaedic residency at University of California, Irvine. Following residency, he completed an additional fellowship year in joint replacement and adult reconstructive surgery at the Institute for Bone and Joint Disorders in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr Patel is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in Total Joint Replacement and Adult Reconstructive Surgery. His area of expertise includes both primary and revision surgical procedures of the hip and knee. He also brings expertise in new surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgical procedures, anterior approach hip replacement surgery, computer navigation, as well as robotic joint replacement.

Dr Patel earned his bachelor’s degree in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He then went on to earn both a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and his Medical Doctorate from Stanford University. While at Stanford, Dr Patel was actively involved in research pertaining to computer navigation systems for joint replacement surgery and also assisted in designing multiple orthopedic surgical devices as a member of the Stanford Biodesign Innovation Program.

Dr Patel subsequently completed his Orthopaedic Surgical Residency at the University of California, Irvine, under the guidance of Dr Robert Gorab and Dr Steven Barnett. After residency, he completed a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction, Arthritis, and Joint Replacement Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. This institution was recently voted the #1 rated Orthopaedic Hospital in the nation according to US News and World Report. While at HSS, Dr. Patel trained under several world renowned orthopedic surgeons, including Drs. Chitranjan Ranawat, Thomas Sculco, and Eduardo Salvati.

Dr. Nader A. Nassif specializes in the treatment of degenerative, inflammatory or traumatic hip and knee conditions. He focuses on primary total joint replacements of the hip and knee, revisions of hip and knee replacements and advanced joint reconstruction procedures. Dr. Nassif has special interest in the use of less invasive surgical approaches and new surgical and implant technology. In addition, Dr. Nassif also cares for patients with benign or malignant tumors of the soft tissues or bones.

Dr. Nassif grew up in Southern California and attended the University of California, Irvine where he received his Bachelor’s degrees in biology and physics. He earned his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School where he graduated with Honors. Dr. Nassif then went on to complete his residency training at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. Following residency, he continued his training at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he focused on hip and knee replacement surgery and adult joint reconstruction. Finally, Dr. Nassif went on to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center where he received additional training in advanced joint reconstructive surgery, limb salvage surgery and the care of benign and malignant tumors of the soft tissue and bone.

Dr. Nassif has been active in research and the advancement of joint replacement and reconstruction surgery. He has authored multiple book chapters as well as presented at many regional, national and international meetings.

Dr. Nassif lives in Irvine with his family. In his leisure time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, water sports and long distance running. He has completed 3 marathons.

Dr. Mikulak is one of the pioneers of minimally invasive hip and knee replacement surgery. He was the first surgeon in Orange County to perform outpatient hip replacement surgery. His protocol for pain management coupled with less invasive surgery have resulted in rapid recovery from hip and knee replacement surgeries.

When not working, Dr. Mikulak enjoys playing golf, hockey, biking and surfing.

Training and Education

Dr. Mikulak attended high school in Hyannis, Massachusetts, where he earned an athletic scholarship to UC Berkeley for gymnastics. After being named Pac-10 Athlete of the year, earning All-American honors, and competing internationally for the USA national gymnastics team, Dr. Mikulak focused his attention on medical school.

At the University of Southern California, he received numerous prestigious academic scholarships and was named Alpha Omega Alpha honor society for his outstanding performance in medical school. To complete his training, Dr. Mikulak crossed town to UCLA where he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and a subspecialty fellowship in Joint Replacement Surgery. He has published and presented extensive research projects.

Dr. Mikulak has been in private practice since finishing his training in 1998 and currently is a hip and knee specialist at California Orthopaedic Specialists in Newport Beach, CA.

Dr. Carlos Prietto is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty training in sports medicine. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Hoag Orthopaedic Institute and a managing partner of Orthopaedic Specialty Institute of Orange County where his clinical practice is devoted to arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee, sports medicine, and knee replacements.
